Airmen in the 341st Medical Group radiology clinic at Malstrom Air Force Base are saving lives in a work setting that is much different than the norm; instead of the bright lights, they're dimmed down.
The group of radiology technicians work in a dimly lit space, necessary to get the most precise image. Patients lay on a therapeutic x-ray table and then the x-ray tube is pulled toward the part of the patient’s body causing the most pain.
In fiscal year 2016 the department performed 3,319 exams and saw 2,858 patients. This is because the clinic works alongside local Veterans Affairs services, so any patient under VA care is authorized to get treatment at this facility instead of traveling to Fort William Henry Harrison. Malstrom’s clinic has just two civilians, one Veterans Affairs employee and one active-duty member working, so they get very busy on a regular basis.
