Bon Secours Mercy Health filed suit Aug. 28, alleging Virginia's largest commercial insurer had denied or downgraded an enormous volume of claims.

The company claimed to investors that it could build the machine for as little as $8,000, ignoring higher alternative estimates provided by internal execs.

The case dates to 2015, when Kentuckian Kimberly Johnson received an erroneous letter from the local hospital stating that she was cancer-free.

NPs purportedly would diagnose serious, complex conditions without the necessary medical imaging to reach such conclusions, the Department of Justice said Sept. 30. 

“After back and forth correspondence, and multiple phone calls, we are thrilled to announce that this campaign was successful,” one of the trade groups said. 

The Addison, Texas-based imaging group is teaming with Jefferson Health to open more than a dozen new centers in the Philadelphia area.
