The American College of Radiology (ACR) is partnering with Nth Dimensions, an educational non-profit organization determined to increase diversity, to offer five summer internships in an effort to introduce women and underrepresented minority medical students to radiological specialties. In addition to early exposure to the practice, initiatives of the internship include clinical and research experience, mentoring and professional development.

“This will be our second year partnering with Nth Dimensions to offer these internships,” Joan Lynch, the ACR’s medical education and student outreach coordinator, told Radiology Business via email. “The first year was funded through an ACR Innovation Fund Grant. To determine the success of the program, we need to follow the interns through their residency match. So, the ACR Commission for Women and Diversity is continuing the program for the next two to three years.”

Lynch added that Nth Dimensions has offered this internship for other specialties, which led to an increased rate of students being matched to residency programs.

“ACR and Nth Dimensions’ efforts and success will translate into measurably more women and minority medical students applying to radiology residency, which should ultimately lead to more diversity in the radiology workforce,” Lynch said.

The deadline to apply for the summer internship program is Jan. 31.
