GE Healthcare packing its bags for downtown Chicago

GE Healthcare is off to the big (second) city, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune that details their move from suburban Chicago to the downtown area. Hundreds of GE Healthcare employees will join their GE Transportation colleagues in the West Loop neighborhood starting in the third quarter of 2017.

GE cites the strong health technology ecosystem of downtown Chicago as a major reason for the move.

“In the past few years, the 'Silicon Valley of the Midwest' has emerged as a top technology hub for businesses,” said GE Healthcare in a statement. “The Barrington-to-Chicago relocation will capitalize on that ecosystem growth, bringing together software engineers, software developers, data scientists, product analysts and project managers from across GE Healthcare, Transportation and Digital for stronger cross-company collaboration and increased innovation with startups, associations and health systems.”

No jobs will be lost as a result of the move, with GE Healthcare CEO John Flannery telling the Tribune that the move will actually add jobs “on the digital side of things.”
