Joint venture between Wake Radiology, UNC Rex Healthcare may lower costs

Wake Radiology, an x-ray and imaging provider, is joining forces with UNC Rex Healthcare in a move that will lower the costs of mammograms, brain scans and other medical tests.

Data from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina shows that CT scans can cost a patient anywhere between $1,000 to $1,600 at North Carolina hospitals, while the same medical service at a private clinic is half the price.

UNC Rex Healthcare’s vice president of ambulatory services, Thomas Williams, says that though charging hospital rates at hospital owned radiology centers is the usual, Rex may be the first hospital in North Carolina to lower radiology fees.
