The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida collected a quarter billion dollars for taxpayers this fiscal year 2016 from high-profile cases involving civil enforcement cases, most alleging radiology and healthcare fraud.   

“Every day, the men and women of the Department of Justice work tirelessly to enforce our laws, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used properly and that the American people are protected from exploitation and abuse,” said Attorney General Lynch.

Life Care Centers of America, a long-term healthcare company, was the largest case during FY2016, agreeing to pay $145 million to settle a government lawsuit alleging it filed false claims with healthcare agencies and military benefits.

Rose Radiology Centers in Tampa was another large case, agreeing to pay $8.7 million to resolve allegations for billing federal health care programs for radiology procedures that were not needed.

“Recovering monies from convicted criminals and others who have defrauded the government is critical in enforcing our nation’s laws,” said U.S. Attorney Bentley in a press release. “Working together with our law enforcement partners, and other federal, state, and local agencies, our efforts ensure that criminals and others committing fraud are held fully accountable for their offenses. Through these coordinated efforts, we are able to help victims recover from their losses, wherever possible, and replenish public resources.”
