Message in a bottle: Renowned radiologist at center of decades-old mystery

Sixty years ago, a man found a handwritten message inside a bottle on an Australian beach. When he couldn’t track down the note’s author, he put it away for decades. His son recently found the note, however, and the mystery has been solved; it was written by radiologist William Hare, back in 1935.

Hare was a young boy on a trip from Australia to New Zealand when he tossed the note overboard, according to a report from ABC Radio Brisbane. He grew up to be Australia’s first radiology professor.

Hare died in 2013, but his daughter came forward when she found out about the mystery. “It was lovely to have something from beyond the grave from him,” she said, as quoted by ABC Radio Brisbane.
