Brandon Taylor, MD, a musculoskeletal radiologist working in Washington, D.C., shared tips for young students when he was profiled by a St. Louis newspaper.

Taylor, who grew up and attended medical school in St. Louis, told the St. Louis American he considered being a teacher or a preacher before ultimately pursuing a career in medicine. He explained that students should look for someone “who looks like you doing what you do.”

“Seeing someone who is doing what you want to do does something to you,” he said, as quoted writer Sharifah Sims-Williams. “What seems so far away, seems a little closer.”

For students of color, he added, this can an especially important moment.
