Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology to pay $10 million, plead guilty to fraud

Zwanger-Pesiri, a Long Island, New York-based radiology company, pleaded guilty to two counts of federal healthcare fraud for systemic and abusive billing practices.

According to a press release by The United States Attorney's Office Eastern District of New York, "Zwanger-Pesiri pled guilty to a criminal information charging the company with illegally engaging in schemes to fraudulently obtain reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid by “bundling” the tests it performed, such that when a patient’s treating physician ordered one test to be performed, Zwanger-Pesiri would automatically perform a related but unordered test."

A settlement with the United States and the State of New York was approved in which Zwanger-Pesiri agrees to turn over $10 million, forfeting $2.4 million in the criminal case and paying $8.2 million to resolve civil liability arising form its fraudulent practices.
