Irish radiologist allegedly misses at least 10 serious cancer diagnoses

Ten patients were misdiagnosed and hundreds more called for repeat imaging after an Irish radiologist allegedly missed a handful of serious cancer diagnoses between March 2016 and July 2017, the Irish Times reported Friday.

More than 46,200 questionable scans belonging to nearly 27,000 patients have now been reviewed by a clinical subgroup—including external radiologists—officials at University Hospital Kerry said. The review began in October after accusations of the doctor’s missed and delayed diagnoses broke last summer.

According to the Times, the South/South-West Hospital Group said that as of Feb. 15, the ten patients whose diagnoses were missed or delayed have open access to counseling services.

A report on the incident, which will also look into radiologists’ workload at the hospital, is expected to be issued in the future.
