Intelerad launches all-in-one VNA software

Intelerad Medical Systems launched its latest comprehensive enterprise imaging system—called CosmosOne—in a bid to centralize patient information and provide an vendor neutral archive (VNA) companion to its workflow and enterprise viewing software.

CosmosOne allows care providers to consolidate storage and security for a huge range of medical information, realizing economies-of-scale savings as well ensuring consistency across departments and facilities.

Consistency doesn’t mean matching, however. A wide range of data normalization, routing and storage rules let users customize the software to fit their individual needs.

“CosmosOne provides unencumbered access to patients’ complete medical records, making it the perfect companion for Intelerad’s workflow and enterprise viewing solutions,” said Randall Oka, President and CEO of Intelerad. “Going beyond the offerings of an ordinary vendor-neutral archive, the solution is highly scalable and flexible, always up-to-date and provides reliable business continuity and data resilience.”

Now that nearly 97 percent of U.S. hospitals are using certified electronic medical records (EMR), imaging departments should focus on squeezing as much value as possible out of EMR and VNA databases, according to Don Woodlock, vice president and general manager of enterprise imaging at GE Healthcare.

“EMR’s generally don’t have diagnostic quality images in there, but enterprise imaging can bring in radiology images, cardiology, pathology, visible light images, or movie files from an endoscopy,” said Woodlock, in an interview with Clinical Innovation + Technology. “You spend millions on your EMR, so bringing that all together in one unified hole gives the physician a holistic view of the patient.”

In addition, the potential encroachment of artificial intelligence technology into the day-to-day responsibilities of a radiologist means they may need to find ways to add value beyond simply reading images—sheparding the transition to enterprise imaging is one way to do that.

Radiologists have arguably the most health IT experience among all physician specialties, and radiology’s central place in the hospital workflow puts radiologists in an opportunistic positon.

CosmosOne is fully compatible with a wide range of file formats and is horizontally expandable, according to Oka.

“CosmosOne adheres to industry standards and profiles, including HL7, FHIR, DICOM, DICOMweb, XDS, and XDS-I,” said Oka. “While this facilitates the integration of new systems, departments, and facilities, it also allows clients to reclaim ownership of their data and avoid painful data migrations.”
