Children learn about imaging, radiation therapy on Take Your Child to Work Day

On April 25, National Take Your Child to Work Day, Siemens Healthineers used materials developed by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) to educate and entertain 100 children during an all-day event. The festivities were held at the Siemens Healthineers offices in Cary, North Carolina.

ASRT’s “Radcademy” program created the educational materials, which are focused on explaining to children “how medical imaging, radiation therapy and other diagnostic technologies are used to diagnose and treat patients.” Julie Gill, PhD, RT(R)(QM), developed Radcademy during her 2013-2014 term as ASRT president.

“Radcademy provides a wonderful opportunity for children to get a better understanding of just what mom and dad do at work,” Nanci Wozniak, BS, RT(N), CNMT, vice president of education & workforce solutions for Siemens Healthineers, said in a prepared statement. “The fun and interactive experience teaches our children more about radiology, what Siemens Healthineers does and how our company positively impacts the world of health care.”

“Creating Radcademy was a smart decision on Dr. Gill and ASRT’s part as the program’s website, videos and classroom curriculum are geared toward young learners, but they also appeal to older students interested in medical imaging and radiation therapy,” Melissa Jackowski, EdD, RT(R)(M), a competency management development specialist for Siemens, said in the same statement.
