New nonalcoholic beer crafted specifically for cancer patients

A new beer being served in the Czech Republic was crafted with a very specific audience in mind: cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

The beverage, called Mamma Beer, is nonalcoholic, according to a report from NPR. It is meant to counteract dysgeusia, a common side effect of chemotherapy that ruins the taste of most food and drinks. The team behind Mamma Beer is also involved with Mamma HELP, a nonprofit breast cancer advocacy group in the Czech Republic.

"Chemotherapy in breast cancer patients often causes a loss in taste or a change of taste that leads to a lower intake of nutrients than patients need during their treatment," said Karolina Hovorkova, MD, as quoted by NPR. Hovorkova has been serving samples of the drink to her patients in Prague since April.
