The Orlando-based Florida Hospital health system is beginning a new initiative focused on lessening the impact of chemotherapy’s various adverse side effects on the hearts of breast cancer patients.
The system received a $10,000 grant from the Hearts Foundation, a program that monitors patients’ hearts using ultrasound imaging, to fund the initiative, according to a report from the Orlando Sentinel.
“When we care for patients, we can’t look at just the cancer or just the heart disease,” Patricia Guerrero, MD, a cardiologist and medical director of Florida Hospital’s Women and Cardiovascular Disease program, said in the Sentinel. “We need to treat the whole person, and this new initiative strengthens our holistic approach to healing.”
