Kansas City hospital offers ‘abbreviated MRI’ to screen for breast cancer

Abbreviated MRI—a new breast imaging modality at University of Kansas Health System—makes screening quicker and less painful, according to a report by local NBC affiliate KSHB-TV.

The process is similar to existing technology that allows patients to control how much compression they receive. Also, with Abbreviated MRI imaging specialists capture fewer images reducing screening time to 10 minutes or less.

Local radiologists hope this technology will encourage women receive annual mammograms by alleviating pain and fear of compression, two of the biggest fears that keep women from screenings.

"You don't have to worry about the pain that's involved with it. It was a really good experience. I'm glad to be one of the first ones to try it," said patient Angela King.
