Radiology practice offering x-rays of strawberries during fruit contamination scare in Australia

Mudgee Radiology, an Australian radiology practice, is offering to scan strawberries after needles were found in a handful, leading to a national fruit contamination scare.

Radiographer Uschi Rowlands, MS, said the resulting panic along with a drought have impacted farmers across the nation. To help farmers and alleviate public fear, Mudgee is offering free x-rays of any strawberries brought in by worried individuals.

“We’re really fond of farmers here at Mudgee Radiology, we’ve done a lot raising money during the drought and I was just horrified to see beautiful strawberries being thrown out and farmers losing their crops and their livelihood.” Rowlands said.

Though only a few have taken the practice up on the offer, Mudgee is doing what they can to help safeguard the community—and the farmers.
