Wales lags behind England in multiparametric MRI availability

Welsh men may be at a disadvantage compared to other countries in the United Kingdom when it comes to early diagnosis of prostate cancer.

According to Prostate Cancer UK, availability of multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) is significantly lower in Wales than England, its neighbor to the east. Just three in seven Welsh facilities offer the scan, while 92 percent of English men live in areas where mpMRI is provided before biopsy.

A recent BBC story detailed a 49-year-old’s prostate cancer diagnosis, which was discovered thank to an MRI after a blood test came back normal.

"I had my MRI scan before my biopsy, which was fortunate,” said Sion Brynach. "The more it is available to everyone, the better. Technology moves on so quickly—things are different in just six months—so you want people to have access to the latest technology when it comes to their health."
