Police filing new charges related to fatal MRI accident

Charges will be filed against ward boy Vitthal Chavan of Nair Hospital in Mumbai, India, for his involvement in the death of 32-year-old Rajesh Maru, who walked into an MRI room with a gas cylinder in January. Two physicians, Chavan and another female attendant were arrested earlier this year for “negligence causing death.” They were released on bail.

Maru was visiting a distant family member in the hospital and was told by Chavan to take the metallic cylinder into the MRI room as the patient would need oxygen. Chavan mistakenly told the patient’s family members that the MRI machine was switched off.

“The cylinder was sucked in by the magnetic waves,” a police officer told the Times of India. “As Maru was next to the trolley, he got dragged in too.”

An engineering team from the MRI machine’s manufacturer, Phillips also inspected the machine.
