Jean-Francois H. Geschwind, MD, a radiologist who previously worked at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, has been sentenced to a year and a day in jail after pleading guilty to four counts of mail fraud back in July. He was also ordered to pay more than $580,000 in restitution.

Geschwind worked in the vascular and interventional radiology division at Johns Hopkins from 1998 to 2015. The U.S. Attorney’s Office described his crime as “a multi-year scheme to unlawfully obtain travel expense reimbursements from his former employer.” Geschwind, according to his plea agreement, made “material misrepresentations and omissions” when filing travel expense reports. He traveled to the United Kingdom for a 13-day vacation, for example, and then had it reimbursed, falsely claiming the trip was related to his work.

The Office of Hopkins Internal Audit was conducting an extensive audit when it discovered evidence of Geschwind’s scam. They then turned the case over to law enforcement, continuing to help as needed. He was facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Geschwind will turn himself in on Dec. 4.
