Agfa announces plans to sell its EHR line for more than $1B

Belgium-based healthcare vendor Agfa-Gevaert plans to sell its electronic health record line for more than $1 billion (USD) next year, the company announced this month.

Clinical healthcare software firm Dedalus has entered into exclusive negotiations to acquire Agfa’s ORBIS EHR line and other related integrated-care products. Pending regulatory approval and other conditions, the transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2020.

In an announcement, Agfa CEO Christian Reinaudo called the sale “a milestone in our transformation process.” He expects that, under the Italy-based new owner’s leadership, the EHR line will continue developing into a “leading player” in the European health IT market. Currently, this piece of Agfa’s business generates about $288 million in annual revenue, and is prevalent in the DACH region of Europe—Germany, Austria and Switzerland—along with France and Brazil.

Agfa said its work will continue in the enterprise imaging and PACS markets. This move will allow the vendor to focus on these lines and continued growth in North America, Australia and the United Kingdom, company officials said.

If approved, Dedalus would grow to include about 3,500 employees operating in 30 countries, according to a separate announcement from the Florence-based company.
