A research team led by Bharti Khurana, MD, of the department of radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, is working to create a program that can identify signs of intimate partner violence (IPV) in imaging results.

The team is one of three finalists for the Brigham Research Institute’s BRIght Futures Prize, an annual competition that gives $100,000 to a project that “works to answer provocative questions or solve grand problems in medicine,” according to a report from Wicked Local. Winning the grant would allow the researchers to hire additional research assistants and give everyone more time to focus on the project.

Khurana explained that one in four women and one in seven men in the United States experience severe IPV in their lifetime. By noticing common injury patterns in x-ray or CT results, she noted, it’s easier to speak to the patient about “what is often a difficult subject” and help them realize the severity of their situation.

Khurana also presented research related to this topic at RSNA 2017 in Chicago.
