SIR backs new bill to reallocate GME opportunities

The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) announced earlier this week that it supports a new bill it says would increase access to government-funded graduate medical education (GME) to newly recognized primary medical specialties such as interventional radiology. The bill would take unused training opportunities and redistribute them.

The Enhancing Opportunities for Medical Doctors Act of 2016 (HR 5188), sponsored by Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah), was introduced to Congress on May 11.

“This bill provides immediate assistance to key residency training programs by tapping existing, unused Medicare-authorized GME resources,” said Charles E. Ray Jr., MD, SIR president, professor and chair of the department of radiology at the University of Illinois at Chicago college of medicine, said in a prepared statement. “Simply put, this bill will help ensure that America will continue to lead the world in providing access to advanced medical care.”

Love’s release about the bill can be read on her website.
