Award recipients announced for ACR 2016

Three influential radiologists have been recognized by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as recipients of the organization's 2016 Gold Medal awards.

Walter J. Curran, Jr., MD; Lawrence P. Davis, MD; and Charles D. Williams, MD, are scheduled to receive the awards on May 15, 2016, during the ACR 2016 annual meeting.

“The ACR’s Board of Chancellors (BOC)—and now the radiology community—will recognize the visionary leadership and extraordinary service of Drs. Curran, Davis and Williams,” Bibb Allen, Jr., MD, chair of the ACR BOC, said in a statement. “They embody the best in today’s medicine in their work as physicians and as contributors to the specialty.”

Curran is the executive director of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, and the Lawrence W. Davis Professor and chair in Emory's department of radiation oncology. He was also the first radiation oncologist to sit as director of a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.

Davis is the vice chair and program director of the department of radiology at both North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In the past, she has served as the vice president and Education Commission chair for the ACR.

Williams practices radiology with Radiology Associates of Tallahassee, and has been there since 1974. He has also held several positions with the ACR, including vice president.

Additional awards will also be given out during the ACR 2016 annual meeting. Professor Peter J. Hoskin of London, England, and Professor Christoph Laurenz Zollikofer of Zurich, Switzerland, will be recognized as Honorary Fellows, while Mary Jane Donahue is scheduled to receive the company’s Distinguished Achievement Award for 27 years of service at the ACR.
