Patient awarded $5.9 million after x-ray mix up leads to unnecessary surgery

A patient from Swarthmore, Pa., has been awarded more than $5.9 million after a hospital mix up led to her getting a surgery she did not need.

According to a report from The Delaware County Daily Times, Darlene Hill was a patient at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, Pa., when her  x-rays were confused with another patient’s, leading to Hill’s appendix being removed.

South East Radiology out of Delaware County, Pa., was found 20 percent negligent by the jury, and Taylor Hospital was found 80 percent negligent.

In a prepared statement, Crozer-Keystone Health System, which runs Taylor Hospital, thanked the jury for its “thoughtful deliberation.”

“In this case, we acknowledged the error previously and disclosed it to the plaintiff as soon as we recognized it and then worked to achieve a fair settlement with her,” the statement read, as reported by the Daily Times
