The Trump administration’s efforts to roll back regulations that limit radiation levels could take a significant step forward this week.

Edward J. Calabrese, PhD, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is scheduled to speak at a congressional hearing on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s proposal on Wednesday, Oct. 3, according to a report from The Associated Press.

Calabrese has said in the past that limiting current restrictions could increase the acceptable radiation dosage, which “would have a positive effect on human health as well as save billions and billions and billions of dollars." 

The EPA first proposed making regulatory changes to radiation levels back in April and raising the idea in a larger proposal focused on improving the agency’s overall transparency. 

“The era of secret science at EPA is coming to an end,”  EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, who has since resigned, said in a past statement. “The ability to test, authenticate, and reproduce scientific findings is vital for the integrity of rule making process. Americans deserve to assess the legitimacy of the science underpinning EPA decisions that may impact their lives.”
