Former President of Wake Radiology to lead North Carolina Medical Society

RALEIGH, NCRobert E. Schaaf, MD, FACR, radiologist and former President of Wake Radiology, was inaugurated Friday, October 24th, as the 161st President of the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) at the society’s Annual Meeting in Greensboro.

Dr. Schaaf is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. He became a member of the NCMS in 1981 and has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2004. Over the years he has participated on numerous NCMS committees including Finance and the Legislative Cabinet.         

“This year we will continue to be a vocal and committed leader in discussions about Medicaid reform in North Carolina,” he said of his goals for 2015. “The Society stands at the forefront, ensuring that physicians and physician assistants have a strong voice on behalf of our patients with policymakers and legislators. We have important work to do to in 2015, and together we can creatively chart a path to reasonable and sustainable change.”

Dr. Schaaf received his MD from Tufts University Medical School in Boston, MA and went on to complete a combined internship/residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. He served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at Duke University Medical Center and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill for a combined 15 years.

In addition to his service with the NCMS, since 2005 Dr. Schaaf has been a Governor-appointed member of the NC Medical Care Commission, which oversees regulation in North Carolina’s hospitals and health care facilities.  He also has served as vice chairman on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Medical Mutual Insurance Company. Dr. Schaaf also is on the Board of Visitors for the Wake Forest University School of Law since 2012.
