Ann Arbor, Michigan-based HistoSonics has announced that radiologist Fred Lee Jr., MD, is the company’s new senior medical advisor and a board member.

HistoSonics specializes in a “non-invasive, non-thermal” tumor ablation technology known as histotripsy, and Lee is viewed as an expert in tumor ablation. He is a professor of radiology, biomedical engineering and urology; a Robert Turrell Professor of medical imaging; and the chief of abdominal intervention at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In the past, he also worked as a founder and board member at NeuWave Medical.

According to Lee, there is a lot of potential in this new histotripsy technology.

“This is where things are heading, and I'm really excited to be a part of it,” Lee said in a prepared statement. “Clinicians, patients and payers are eager for an ideal ablation modality that is non-invasive, is highly effective at killing targeted tumors, and causes minimal collateral damage.  With what we know about histotripsy today, this modality has the potential to offer these attributes and more.”
