The results of thousands of mammograms from an imaging center in Hawaii are in doubt after the FDA had its mammography services temporarily suspended.  

According to a report from the Hawaii Tribune Herald, almost 12,000 mammograms taken between June 30, 2014, and August 24, 2015, at the Women’s Imaging Center in Hilo are in question. The center is operated by Hawaii Radiologic Associates (HRA).

An annual evaluation by the American College of Radiology revealed one of the center’s mammography units was not up to standards, and the FDA ordered the center to suspend mammography operations until re-certification is 100 percent complete.

The center’s other imaging equipment remains accredited, and those services continue to be carried out. HRA has suggested that patients ask their physician if a re-test is required. If one is needed, HRA will cover the cost, and it will be carried out at another facility.

“We’re just covering all of the bases,” David Camacho, MD, one of the HRA’s radiologists, said, as quoted by the Tribune Herald. “We’ll look at everybody and make sure.”
