The Department of Justice (DOJ) is considering a lawsuit that could block UnitedHealth Group’s $13 billion deal to purchase Change Healthcare.
News that the DOJ may get involved first broke in March—and now sources familiar with the situation are suggesting that a lawsuit may be on the way.
The Information was the first outlet to report this update. The website indicated on Aug. 3 that private attorneys outside the DOJ had been contacted about potentially leading the incoming litigation.
Multiple parties have come out against UnitedHealth’s $8 billion acquisition of Change, which would also involve moving an additional $5 billion in debt from Change to UnitedHealth. The American Hospital Association, for instance, has shared concerns that this deal could lead to less competition and higher prices. The deal between UnitedHealth and Change, if not blocked by any legislation, is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2021.
