A Chicago radiologist and her research team have won the Society For Pediatric Radiology’s Walter E. Berdon Award for their paper about thyroid cancer in teens, Loyola University announced this week.
Jennifer Lim-Dunham, MD, is a radiology professor at Loyola, according to a statement, and works in diagnostic radiology and radiology imaging. She and her colleagues won the SPR award at its annual symposium in Nashville, Tennessee, for research published in Pediatric Radiology last year.
Lin-Dunham et al.’s study centered around ultrasound guidelines issued by the American Thyroid Association, which Lin-Dunham’s team found could reliably identify pediatric patients who should be biopsied for thyroid cancer.
Thyroid cancer research is important in the pediatric population because incidence of the disease is increasing in the younger demographic. Teens have a 10-fold greater incidence of thyroid cancer than younger kids.
The Walter E. Berdon Award honors the best clinical research paper in the field each year.
